报告摘要:The issue of electrical wire fires caused by arcing or overheating presents critical safety hazards in both terrestrial power systems and microgravity environments like the International Space Station. This study investigates the dynamics of molten polyethylene insulation and flame spread under AC and DC electric fields. Results indicate that Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) forces—including electrostatic, dielectrophoretic, and electric pressure forces—govern the behavior of the molten polymer, significantly outweighing gravity and surface tension. Unique phenomena such as fuel-vapor jets and electrospray were observed. Furthermore, soot deposition was found to enhance electrostatic forces and locally reduce surface tension, accelerating droplet dripping and lateral flame spread. The findings conclude that flame spread is driven by EHD forces rather than simple thermal balance, suggesting that current safety codes must be revised to account for electric field effects.
