State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering

The State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow in Power Engineering, ratified by the State Planning Commission in February 1990, was built up in December 1992 and opened to the public in 1993. In March 1997, the Laboratory was evaluated as the top-level in the Engineering Thermo-physics and Energy Utilization Section in the field of Materials and Engineering by MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) and NSFC (National Nature Science Foundation of China). In 2003, the Laboratory was evaluated as top 1 in the field of Material and Engineering, and then in 2008, 2013 and 2018, the Laboratory was evaluated as the top-level continuously.

The Laboratory carries out innovative researches aiming at the clean, low-carbon and high-efficiency utilization of fossil energy, as well as the large-scale, low-cost and high-efficiency utilization technologies of renewable energy, dedicating to solving the theoretical and technological problems on multiphase flow in energy-power engineering, energy-chemical engineering, energy-environmental engineering and many other fields. The Laboratory aims to provide solid supports for the construction of clean, low-carbon, high-efficiency and secure energy and power systems, and to establish a top-level international platform for cultivation, innovation and community.

The laboratory has undertaken 4 National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) (as Chief Scientists), 12 National Key Research and Development Program of China (as Chief Scientists), over 210 important projects including the National Major Scientific and Technological Special Projects, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), and the National Key Technology R&D Plan, etc. In addition, over 410 programs of the National Nature Science Foundation of China have been granted. The Laboratory has gained a series of awards, including 7 National Natural Science Awards, 10 National Award for Technological Invention, 10 National Science and Technology Progress Awards and 68 first-class awards of provincial and ministerial level. A poly-generation-technology based on steaming coal with supercritical water gasification for hydrogen production, power generation and heat supply is selected as “Ten major scientific and technological progress of China’s colleges and Universities”.

Key Laboratory of Thermo-Fluid Science and Engineering, Ministry of Education

The MOE Laboratory of Thermo-Fluid Science and Engineering was officially approved to be established by the State Ministry of Education in November 2010, and its construction plan was approved in May 2011.

In order to meet the national needs for energy saving & pollution reducing and development of frontier science, this Laboratory is aimed at conducting some foresight and strategic systematic researches related to the basic scientific issues originated from the processes of energy transformation and utilization. The research activities of the Laboratory are focused on four areas: thermophysical properties of fluids and new thermodynamic cycle; mechanisms and advanced technologies of enhancing heat & mass transfer; numerical simulations in thermo-fluid science and its engineering applications; principle of energy saving and new technologies of pollution reducing. The Laboratory is expected to be a comprehensive interdisciplinary creative research center and base in the fields of energy transformation and utilization, a teaching center for the courses of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer , and an education center for the talents of energy and power engineering. The researches executed in the Laboratory are characterized by their fundamental, comprehensive and international features, with focus being paid on the intersecting of disciplines .

There are 64 full-time faculty members in the Laboratory, among them are 41 professors, 17 associate professors. Among the members there are two Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two National Outstanding Teachers, one National Expert with Outstanding Contributions. Additionally, there are over 200 graduate students and several postdoctoral researchers in the lab. It is a research group with appropriate age-structure, strong research-ability and international influences.

The Laboratory is equipped with a series of advanced devices and instruments for the research on fluid flow, heat transfer and new and sustainable energy. It has become a well-known base for scientific innovation, technology transfer, talent cultivation and academic exchange in the field of thermo-fluid science and technology.
