报告题目:The Future of Sustainable Buildings

报告简介:Buildings are becoming more energy efficient, i.e., sustainable, but the limits to their energy efficiency are not well known. After an overview of building energy trends in the USA and worldwide, an analysis is presented of an ideal, all-electric residential home in the USA that defines the ultimate minimum energy consumption of an ‘ideal’ house, akin to the Carnot efficiency of an engine or the Carnot coefficient of performance of a refrigerator. Given that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) remains one of the largest energy end uses in buildings, the presentation concludes with a discussion of cooling technologies that are becoming more and more important with ongoing global warming.

报告人简介:Patrick Phelan is Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (SEMTE) at the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. He received a B.S. from Tulane University (1985), M.S from MIT (1987) and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1990). He has held positions as a Summer Faculty Research Participant at Argonne National Laboratory, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hawaii, Motorola-ASU Summer Faculty Fellow, ASME Chair of the K-18 Committee on Low-Temperature Heat Transfer, ASME Chair of the K-5 Committee on Long Range Directions and Issues in Heat Transfer, Director of the NSF Thermal Transport Processes Program (2006 – 2008), and recently served with the Department of Energy as the Manager of the Emerging Technologies Program in the Building Technologies Office (2012 – 2016). He is also the recipient of several honors and awards including the NSF CAREER Award, and together with his co-authors he received a Best Paper Award for the Heating and Cooling Applications and Analysis Track at the Energy Sustainability Conference, ASME Solar Energy Division. He recently received another Best Paper Award at the ASME Power and Energy 2015 Conference, ASME Power Division. Some of Professor Phelan’s professional activities include:

Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs, ASU Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (2016 – present)

Assistant Director of the ASU Industrial Assessment Center

Founding Director of the ASU Professional Science Master’s in Solar Energy Engineering & Commercialization

Associate Director of the ASU National Center of Excellence on SMART Innovations for Urban Climate + Energy, where SMART = Sustainable Materials And Renewable Technologies (2006 – 2012)

Senior Sustainability Scientist at the ASU Global Institute of Sustainability

Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer (2008 – 2014)

Professor Phelan’s research interests are in the thermal sciences, including nanoscale transport processes; sustainable energy systems, particularly solar thermal energy and other sustainable energy systems; sustainable cooling systems; nanoscale thermal transport processes; waste heat energy conversion; and energy policy. His teaching interests are focused on solar thermal engineering, heat & mass transfer, and thermodynamics.
