讲座一:Needs and Challenges for Ensuring Structural Integrity,Reliability and Safety of Gas Turbine Engines–focus on Fatigue Life Assessment and Prediction Technology

讲座时间:2015年7月6日上午9:00

讲座地点:能源馆220会议室

讲座人:Herman Shen教授

讲座内容:

As we are all aware of, engineered structures are susceptible to fatigue failure upon an excess of loading cycles, wherein the quantity of excess is dependent upon both the nature of the thermomechanical loading and the attendant material processes activated under prescribed operating conditions. Fatigue life assessment and prediction is difficult even for circumstances involving simple loading; as such, the juncture of intricate loading and hostile operating environment endemic to structures like gas turbine hardware presents a considerable obstacle. Nevertheless, the necessity of developing accurate lifing assessment and design tools for complex loading, hostile operating conditions, and material degradation cannot be ignored, as the fatigue failure of gas turbine components has been attributed to a variety of disasters and financial lost. For that, Dr. Shen has developed a novel energy-based lifing framework for assessing and prediction of fatigue (high cycle, low cycle, TMF, and creep-fatigue) lives under real world loading conditions. Dr. Shen’s research approach, in general, is trying to approach the structural lifing management problem based on simple energy theory which states: the total strain energy dissipated during both a quasi-static process and a dynamic process are equivalent. A summary of Dr. Shen’s contributions in the subject areas will be presented.

讲座人简介:

Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, The Ohio State University, received his M.S. & Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from UniversityofMichiganin 1986 and 1989, respectively. He joined the faculty of the Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University in August 1989. For the past twenty six years, he has pioneered developments in structural health management framework and fatigue life prediction schemes for gas turbine engines, advanced composites, and adhesive joints. He is a recipient of the Air Force Research Initiation Award in 1991, ALCOA Science Foundation Award in 1995, and The Ohio State University College of Engineering Lumley Research Award in 2001.
