Accelerator driven neutron sources and its applications
Neutron has its own special characteristics compared with X-ray: for example, strong interaction with light elements such as hydrogen and lithium, and strong penetration power. Due to these characteristics the neutron has been used widely in life science, material analysis, radiography of industrial products and so on. Accelerator driven neutron sources are becoming popular method to provide neutron source at present. For the design of the accelerator driven neutron source we have to consider not only neutron intensity but also emission time distribution that decides the energy resolution. To search the optimal design of the moderator, we need to examine various materials and shapes. Recently, Compact Accelerator-driven Neutron Sources (CANS) have been recognized to be useful for the neutron science, and new neutron sources were built in Japan and in the world. In Japan various experiments have been performed using CANS and interesting methods and results have been obtained. In this lecture, the principle of neutron slowing down relating to the accelerator driven neutron sources will be explained, and the applications of CANS will be introduced.
