讲座I: Theory and Measurements of Radiative Properties of Nanostructures

时间:2017年8月10日上午09:00-11: 00

地点:热流科学报告厅(原东三楼东汽报告厅)

讲座摘要:There are many important applications of nano/microscale thermal radiation such as energy harvesting,

nanomanufacturing, thermal control and management, and highresolution thermal mapping. Nanostructures enable

tailoring spectral and directional radiative properties in the far field. Recent advances in graphene and other

twodimensional (2D) materials offer enormous potential to transform current microelectronic, optoelectronic,

photonic devices, as well as energy systems. As a layered 2D material with carbon atoms arranged in a

honeycomb lattice, graphene has unique electronic, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. Exotic

radiative properties and nearfield enhancement can be enabled by graphenecovered micro/nanostructures,

including perfect absorption, blocking assisted transmission, and enhanced near-field radiative transfer.

I will present the basic theory of electromagnetic waves and radiative properties of nano/microstructures,

including 2D materials, with both numerical predictions and experimental measurements.

讲座II: Fundamentals and Applications of Near-Field Thermal Radiation

时间:2017年8月14日上午09:00-11: 00

地点:热流科学报告厅(原东三楼东汽报告厅)

讲座摘要:Nanoscale thermal radiation can significantly enhance the radiative heat flux at close proximity or in the

near field. The fundamentals of near-field radiative heat transfer will be discussed, along with applications to devices

such as near-field thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices, thermoradiative(TR) power generators, and

electroluminescent (EL) refrigerators. In a TR cell, electrical power is directly extracted from a semiconductor pn

junction whose temperature is higher than its surroundings; at the same time, the semiconductor diode

emits photons to the surroundings. In EL refrigeration, the net radiative heat transfer is from an object

at a lower temperature to an object at a higher temperature by electrically biasing a p-n junction to change

the photon chemical potential.Recent modeling results of near-field-enhanced EL refrigeration and TPV

devices will be presented, along with experimental demonstrations of near-field radiative heat transfer.

讲座人简介:Professor Zhuomin Zhang earned a Ph.D. degree from MIT and worked at NIST and University

of Florida prior to joining Georgia Tech. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Science

and Technology of China (Hefei). Professor Zhang is a Fellow of ASME, AAAS, and APS. Professor Zhang’s

research interests are in micro/nanoscale heat transfer especially thermal radiation for energy conversion

and temperature measurement. He has written a book on Nano/Microscale Heat Transfer, co-authored over

170 journal papers, and given over 300 invited and contributed presentations. He currently serves as

an associate editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer and Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative

Transfer. Professor Zhang was a recipient of the 1999 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and

Engineers (PECASE) and the 2015 ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award (in the Science category).

He has also won a number of teaching, research, and best paper awards. He has been named an

Overseas Expert of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
